Color Commentary "Jawn": Unveiling Cultural Competency's Role in Spatial Understanding

Color Commentary is a series that elevates the inspiring stories of people who have overcome adversity, showcasing their resilience, determination, and cultural values. They inspire hope and demonstrate that challenges can be conquered.

This exhibit starts by looking at the role cultural humility plays in our ability to understand and navigate spaces around us. This exhibit, titled Color Commentary "Jawn": Unveiling Cultural Humility's Role in Spatial Understanding, embarks on a journey to explore the multifaceted meanings behind a seemingly simple slang term originating from Philadelphia: 'jawn.' Beyond its linguistic roots, 'jawn' serves as an allegory that vividly demonstrates how cultural Humility can lead to various degrees of understanding - be it positive, negative, or none at all - in relation to the spaces that shape our lives. This exhibition delves into the dynamic interplay between cultural humility and spatial investigations using "the block" to organize the discussion. This space, like a preverbal ice cube tray, intricately mirrors the intervals between houses and curb cuts. While seemingly relentless, a closer reading illustrates the narratives of residents as they transform inherited spaces into unique expressions of self. Each 'jawn' acts as a vivid prism, shedding light on the multifaceted stories within culturally significant terrains.
